This week, the first entry to Nippon Ichi's devilishly clever hit strategy RPG Disgaea series has made its debut on Steam. The original game came out for the PlayStation 2 back in 2003 and has since been ported to the PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable. It also spawned 4 direct sequels, a number of spin-off games, a manga, an anime, and even some official merchandise. The Steam port is based off of the enhanced PlayStation Portable version of the game which included a widescreen format, plus additional modes and content not found in the original release.

Although spring may be right around the corner, I am still trying to enjoy what little of winter is left. It may be the coldest season (sometimes ridiculously so) but it can also be quite a lot of fun. What other time of year can the entire landscape be magically transformed into one giant playground? Winter is the time for snowball fights, sledding, hot chocolate, warming up next to a roaring fire, and for some, fighting for your virtual life on a frozen, hostile alien world. When it comes to gaming, the best titles to play this time of year are the ones that have the most in common with the season itself. Here is a list of 6 great games to play when it's wintertime.
Far Cry Primal seems to be the big release this week. In case you ever wanted to see what it might have been like to be a caveman, now's your chance. Experience the danger of hunting a woolly mammoth. Or ride on one and have it stomp on your enemies. This is Far Cry, after all.
Also out this week, the second Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare game, a console port of the popular mobile game, Hitman Go, and the Wii U/PC platform puzzle game, Toki Tori 2. Walk softly and carry a big stick, then jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases. -Developers: Capcom, Dimps -Platforms: PlayStation 4 (reviewed), Steam -Price: $59.99 I want to tell you that Capcom has delivered yet again. I want to tell you that Street Fighter V is a worthy successor to Street Fighter IV in nearly every respect. I want to tell you that you should go out and buy this game as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I cannot. Street Fighter V sort of hit this week. Technically, it is out and available for purchase, but with a good portion of the game still yet to arrive, one can't help wondering where Capcom gets off charging $60 for it. Especially considering that you could just buy Ultra Street Fighter IV instead and get more than three times the content for half the price. And let's be clear, Street Fighter V isn't a bad game, per se; it's just criminally incomplete. Hopefully, at some point in the not-too-distant future, Street Fighter V will be able to offer close to the same amount of value that Ultra currently does. Until that day comes however, you probably shouldn't waste your time (or money).
Also out this week, Toy Soldiers: Complete, a very interesting-looking pyschological horror game called Layers of Fear, and an apparent intergalactic co-op beat 'em up / Xbox One timed exclusive called Zheros. Don't let your wallet take a beating that you'll be kicking yourself over later. Jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases. After a lengthy two-week hiatus, the New Nintendo eShop Releases are back again. And this week is practically overflowing with great new titles (including a few that we missed before). Of course, the biggest game to drop this week is actually the dual release of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest.
As a royal from the fictional Hoshido kingdom, Corrin is captured and raised from a young age by the rival Nohr royalty. Years later, the two kingdoms begin to go to war with each other and the player, as Corrin, must choose whether to fight for their adopted kingdom of Nohr (the storyline of Conquest) or their birth kingdom of Hoshido (the storyline of Birthright). Pick a side and go to battle for whichever family you prefer. Or, if you are really a Fire Emblem fan, give both games a shot. (According to the Fire Emblem Fates game links below, you can elect to purchase a discounted download of the opposite game from Chapter Six in either story.) Also out these past few weeks, the crazy 4-way Nintendo-SEGA-Capcom-Namco crossover tactical RPG sequel, Project X Zone 2, the Wii U Wii edition of Resident Evil 4, and a pair of NES Ninja Gaiden sequels. Pick your battle and choose your fate, then jump past the break to see more new(ish) releases. At long last, Street Fighter V has arrived. Seven years and four editions after the release of Street Fighter IV, the next entry in the series is finally here and ready to throw down. The roster is a noticeably reduced when compared to Ultra Street Fighter IV, but with nice new graphics, new gameplay tweaks, and brand new characters to play with (in addition to some returning favorites from the Alpha series), Street Fighter V may well be the first big must-have title of the year.
Also out this week, a port of eastasiasoft's PlayStation 3 tactical RPG, Rainbow Moon, a very interesting-looking psychological horror game called Layers of Fear, and an action runner game set in the Tron universe. Rise up, enter the fray, then jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. Tonight, turn the lights down low, curl up by the fire, and reflect on the mysteries of love as you take time to appreciate the relationship you've built with that special someone. Or alternatively, curl up by the screen and take some time to appreciate Firewatch (in which you build a relationship with your supervisor while reflecting on the mysteries going on in the wilderness around you).
You may also enjoy some of the other titles that came out this week, including the third and supposedly final installment in the Assassin's Creed Chronicles series, yet another entry in Koei (Tecmo)'s long-standing hack and slash Warriors series (this time with a fantasy anime theme), and the 2004 Vietnam first-person shooter, Men of Valor. Remember folks, dinner and candy gets eaten, flowers will wither and die, but games can be enjoyed again and again and again. Just sayin'. Jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases. Firewatch, the debut indie game from Campo Santo was released this week. You may remember it from last year's E3 trailer as the interesting-looking game about a fire lookout in the remote wilderness. As the lookout, you will venture out into the surrounding Wyoming forest from your fire tower base of operations. During the course of the game, you will uncover clues related to mysterious ongoing occurrences while forging a relationship with your female supervisor over a two-way radio.
Also out this week, fellow E3 presentation and yarn-enthusiast puzzle-platformer, Unravel, the final chapter in the Assassin's Creed Chronicles trilogy, and a new-content, enhanced version of last year's hit zombie survival game, Dying Light. Come for the peaceful outdoor experience, stay for the tense uncertainty, then jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases. |
