Also out this week, the obligatory annual release of MLB: The Show (which means that it's very likely only a matter of time before the servers for last year's edition get taken down), a Koei Tecmo JRPG called Nights of Azure, and Arcade classic Life Force, Konami's spin-off of their more famous shooter, Gradius. Make a fairly decent 5th and final game to an outstanding series, then jump the shark with an unnecessary, less compelling 6th installment. Jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases.
Resident Evil 6 has shambled its reanimated corpse onto the PlayStation 4 this week. Despite being the worst of all the Resident Evil games, RE 6 is still part of a very renowned series. The game is actually somewhat bearable, though after playing through all the others, one can't help but wonder what Capcom was thinking when they made this. The game is still worth checking out, especially for fans of the series, and the low price makes it all the more palatable.

March is typically a time of the year when new game releases are pretty sporadic. As such, it can sometimes be difficult for gamers to figure out what they should be playing. If that happens to be the case for you, I have a helpful suggestion. Why not play games that pay tribute to the god for which the month was named?
The word March is a derivative of Martius, which was what the Romans called it. The month was named for Mars, the Roman god of war. For a good part of Rome's early history, March was observed as the first month of the calendar. Along with the start of spring and the agricultural season, March also marked a return to warfare (the Romans traditionally ended most of their military activity in October). Many festivals were held in the month of March to celebrate the god whom they viewed both as a symbol of their military might, as well as a father to the Roman people. In keeping with the original spirit of the month, it seems only appropriate to play games that are related to Mars and to warfare in general. Here is a list of 9 great games to play when it's March. Day of the Tentacle still seems to be the big release this week. That's not surprising. When you consider the fact that its still popular over 20 years after it first came out, you've got to admit that game has staying power. It's a shame Double Fine didn't take the time to remaster the prequel, Maniac Mansion, as well. At least its still included in Day of the Tentacle though.
Also out in the past two weeks, the previously PlayStation Vita exclusive Hyperdimension Neptunia spin-off, HD U: Action Unleashed, Atari Vault, AKA the means of unlocking the games of your childhood (or your parents childhood, as the case may be), and a brand new TrackMania game. Have a blast from the past, then jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases. This will be the first entry in what I am going to try to make a semi-regular column. Each one will focus on a current game that I feel is ideal for being played and enjoyed together by parents (dads, in my case) and their kids. My four-year-old son began to take an interest in video games over the last year. I started playing when I was about the same age, so I was only too happy to encourage his interest. When I was a kid, most of the games that were available were quite a bit less violent than today. As such, the question of what is age-appropriate becomes pretty important. I decided to go out and buy a Wii U since Nintendo is pretty well-known for having family-friendly games, and because most of the ones I owned didn't really fit the bill. One of the first games I picked up for the new system was Super Mario 3D World (or as my son likes to call it, "Cat Mario"). This turned out to be a great purchase because both of us have found it to be quite enjoyable. The gameplay is the same as it was in Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS, except that in this installment, there can be multiple players on screen at the same time. Day of the Tentacle is now available for the PlayStation 4. 23 years after it originally came out, the classic old-school LucasArts graphic adventure game has been remastered and rereleased by Double Fine. The remaster features redrawn high resolution artwork and reworked audio with optional commentary by the original creators.
Also out in the past two weeks, EA's second official UFC game, a PS4-playable version of Rockstar's PS2 Bully game, and TrackMania Turbo. Save the world from the villainous grasp of a mutated tentacle, then jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases The 20th anniversary of the crazy popular Pokémon franchise continues this month as Pokkén Tournament is now choosable on the Wii U. After hitting arcades in Japan last year, the Bandai-Namco-developed Tekken-style Pokémon fighting game has now arrived on Wii U consoles worldwide. Though the title may be influenced by some of Namco's harder-core fighting games, Pokkén Tournament was also designed to be a bit more accessible to newer and younger fighting game players. The arcade version even featured a standard console-style controller in place of the traditional arcade stick and buttons.
Also out in the past two weeks, Game Boy Advance Virtual Console versions of the dual-release pair of Mega Man Battle Network 6 games, and a new pair of NES Virtual Console releases. I choose you, Pikachu Libre! Jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases. The Division still appears to be the game to play this week. Reviews from the gaming press have been pretty consistently positive so far. Like the aptly named title however, fan opinions seem to have seen a bit of a division. Even so, the game is most likely worth checking out at some point, even if that means waiting for the inevitable sale.
Also out this week, CAVE's side-scrolling Gothic Lolita/Halloween-themed bullet hell Arcade shooter, Deathsmiles, WWE 2K16, and a port of a PlayStation Vita JRPG dungeon crawler called Mind Zero. Gear up and get ready to take back New York, then jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases. Ubisoft's long-awaited, post-apocalyptic, multiplayer-focused, tactical third-person shooter, The Division, has finally come to the PlayStation Store. The game takes place in an open-world Manhattan following a pandemic that has caused society to collapse. As a member of "The Division", your mission is to investigate the source of the outbreak and attempt to restore order to the city. While there is a single-player element to the game, the real highlight seems to be the competitive multiplayer mode in which you fight with, and against fellow players in order to extract loot and level up your character.
Also out in the past two weeks, a PS4 port of Nippon Ichi Software's PlayStation 3 action RPG, The Witch and the Hundred Knight, the bro-tastically action-packed run-and-gun platformer, Broforce, and a new Digimon RPG called Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. When society falls, you rise. Jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases. BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend came to Steam this week. The updated version of the third chapter in the popular Arcade fighting franchise, Chrono Phantasma Extend is also the third BlazBlue game to arrive on Steam. In terms of what's been added since the last BlazBlue title, this one features new sprites, new balancing, new gameplay mechanics, and 9 additional characters. If you're looking for the definitive version of BlazBlue, this is the the one to own.
Also out this week, Stone Age action-adventure game, Far Cry Primal, the fourth installment to the point-and-click Deponia series, and a visual novel called Xblaze that is actually a spin-off from the BlazBlue universe. The wheel of fate is turning. Jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases. |
