 New Nintendo eShop Releases: StarTropics

So evidently, it's been 6 weeks since our last Nintendo eShop post. Sorry about that. A post was actually supposed to go up 4 weeks ago, when the Sega 3D Classics Collection came out, but we were unfortunately unable to follow through at that time. As for the rest of those weeks, well...did we say sorry already?

At any rate, we've finally returned from the void and it seems like we picked a great time to do so. That's because this week, Nintendo has a pair of NES Virtual Console classics that are perfect for helping you kick off this Memorial Day weekend (and the unofficial start of summer); StarTropics and Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II.

In the first game of this Zelda-esque series, you must search for your missing archaeologist uncle, Dr Jones. (No, not that archaeologist named Dr Jones!) With your trusty yo-yo in hand, you will travel to the surrounding tropical islands seeking clues to his whereabouts. The second game is somewhat similar to the first but it also features time travel.

Also out in the past 6 weeks, the aforementioned Sega 3D Classics Collection and the Wii U Wii version of Xenoblade Chronicles. Take a test of island courage, then jump past the break to see more new releases from the past month and a half.

 New PlayStation Store Releases:  Overwatch

This week, Blizzard Entertainment's latest offering, Overwatch, has arrived. Much like Battleborn, that preceded it earlier this month, Overwatch is a first-person shooter with a pinch of MOBA added for character and body. Between the two titles, Overwatch seems to be the more popular choice, despite the fact that it arguably provides less value. It seems then that Overwatch might just be able to offer a slightly more compelling gameplay experience. But perhaps you should judge for yourself.

Also out this week, legendary Neo Geo fighter, The Last Blade 2, and a pair of minor indie hits, freshly ported over from Steam. Begin your watch, then jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases.

 New Steam Releases: Doom

So the big release last week was, of course, Doom. And just as expected (and hoped) it seems pretty clear that the game is one of the must-play titles of 2016. With the exception of only a few other notable releases last week, there wasn't too much else to post about though. So we waited another 7 days and now there is a bit more.

Also out in the past two weeks, the HD remaster, Final Fantasy X double-shot, Shock Troopers (the Neo Geo's other answer to Contra), and a somewhat dark, previously PlayStation Vita exclusive puzzle-adventure game by Nippon Ichi Software. Venture into, and then escape from the pits of Hell, then jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases.

 New PlayStation Store Releases: Doom

This past week saw the release of one of the most highly-anticipated games of the year. Much like Doom 3, the new Doom is technically a reboot of the series (that they were originally also planning to call Doom 4). Both games also feature updated mechanics and slick new cutting-edge graphics while retaining that same great Doom flavor that you know and love so well. Basically, if you like Doom, but you would prefer to experience an updated refresh about every decade or so, it looks like id Software has you covered.

Also out in the past two weeks, Naughty Dog's highly-anticipated 4th main installment to the Uncharted series, a PS4 remaster of Sega's excellent tactical RPG, Valkyria Chronicles, and Deep Silver's brand new sequel to THQ's 2011 near-future first-person shooter, Homefront. Fight like hell, then jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases.

 Game Changers: Out Run

Out Run (Arcade, Master System, Genesis) (SEGA, 1986)
So, I downloaded Out Run onto my son's 2DS recently, and that got me thinking about games that have had a significant impact on myself over the years. Games that I just couldn't stop coming back to time and time again. Games that, for me, were so astounding and groundbreaking, so incredibly stunning and awe-inspiring that they redefined what I thought a game could or should be. I decided to start a column that pays tribute to just those sort of games. And what better title to start with than the one that not only inspired it, but perhaps had the biggest effect on me of all?

 New Steam Releases: Battleborn

At the end of the week, it looks like Battleborn is still more or less the game to play. At the very least, it is the game to check out. Fans and critics do seem to be somewhat divided on it, though some people certainly seem to be having fun with it. And whatever else you say about it, the game certainly has style.

Also out in the past two weeks, a Steam version of Shadow Complex (remastered, no less), a port of one of the greatest baseball games ever to grace the arcades, a new spin-off title in the JRPG Hyperdimension Neptunia series. When in doubt, try before you buy. (Or simply make use of Steam's refund service, as necessary.) Jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases.

This week marks the debut of Gearbox Software's new MOBA-infused first-person shooter, Battleborn. In Battleborn, you play as one of 25 unique characters in team-based, competitive online multiplayer matches. There is also a campaign mode in which you must attempt to save the last remaining star in the Universe from being extinguished by a mysterious evil. The story can be experienced either alone, or via online and/or split-screen co-op.

Also out in the past two weeks, a multiplayer, sci-fi twin-stick shooter called Alienation, a remaster of Epic Games' critically-acclaimed Metroidvania adventure, Shadow Complex, and a PS4 port of the PS2 port of the excellent Neo Geo fighting game, The King of Fighters 2000. You were born for this. Jump past the break to see more of this fortnight's new releases.
